Our Policy on Letters The Center wishes to encourage dialogue on the topics of whiteness and white
American culture in an atmosphere that is respectful. As a policy, we let letter
writers speak for themselves. All letters must be accompanied by the writer's email
address. We will not publish anonymous letters. Also, please limit the length to
500 words or less. Longer letters may not be published. |
The entire dialogue on guilt and innocence is simply a smokescreen hiding the truly painful inner reality of white culture. We have failed to live up to our own values. Go! Unable to see race, they cannot see racism. Blind to color, they are blind to white culture as well. In a racially structured society they are unable to change a structure they fail to see. Go! The demotion of African Americans to subhuman status was part of the same process of forming the "American" character the historians describe. Indeed, it was necessary to the process itself. Unless black Americans were written out of the human race, "Americans" could not declare themselves custodians of the universal rights we treasure so dearly. Go! There is another model. This third model says that you can be white, intentionally, consciously and with some pride, and also be nonracist. You can look at the collective action of your people and hope that they might learn to live in a multiracial society without having to dominate it, either consciously or unconsciously. Go! I do my work not out of anger or alienation, but out of concern and love. I know white people. Many of us are deeply troubled by race and we are lost. No matter how hard we try, it seems impossible to get it right. Some of us quit trying. Some of us lead quiet lives, trying at best to do no harm. Some of us lash out at others, blaming those others for feelings in ourselves we do not understand. Go! |
