This research is for an important assessment for my senior year here in Australia and I was hoping to do a cross cultural comparison with opnions of Whites in the United States. I'm wondering if you know about my more resent book, STAR TREK AND HISTORY: RACE-ING TOWARD A WHITE FUTURE (Rutgers University Press, 1998). As the title might imply, it traces the meaning of race -- or the dominance of whiteness -- in the Star Trek "mega-text," from the original television series to the films to the recent spin-offs to the fan community on the Internet. The method is critical/cultural studies.

Here's an info angle that sheds light on how multi-national corporate interests and elites created the racial demarcation in America to foment a cushion between the workers, diverting attention from their economic exploitation. Initially, in this country, working-class Blacks and Whites related like regular people.

"To those used to the smell of servants just from the ship, they will be easily discovered unless they have procured new clothes." Advertisement in the May 5, 1775 issue of the Virginia Gazette for escaped indentured servants.

"Both in Rotterdam and in Amsterdam the people are packed densely, like herrings so to say, in the large sea-vessels. One person receives a place of scarcely 2 feet width and 6 feet length in the bedstead, while many a ship carries four to six hundred souls;....

"Many people whimper, sigh and cry piteously for their homes; most of them get homesick. Many hundred people necessarily die and perish in such misery, and must be cast into the sea, which drives their relatives, or those who persuaded them to undertake the journey, to such despair that it is almost impossible to pacify and console them.

"Children from 1 to 7 years rarely survive the voyage. I witnessed misery in no less than 32 children in our ship, all of whom were thrown into the sea. The parents grieve all the more since their children find no resting-place in the earth...."

The exaggerated emphasis on differences between Blacks and Whites in contemporary times underscored the need to enlist the above excerpts on the inhumane practices of multinational business concerns and economic elites against the labor market. It has never mattered to the forces of avarice what color the laborer was, or is. They have always been driven by the bottom line, profit. Thus, an adequate framework from which to analyze the structural social psychology of the contemporary era must encompass the historical cognitions that have brought us to where we are. Codification against Blacks appears to have worked to create an "other" which takes the light off of the multinational corporations and elites that have traditionally been the instigators of polarization. It is defined as the encoding that takes place in the minds of others about a group based on exaggerated differences, and a stripping down of the group to encompass schematically limited personal characteristics.

But suffice to say, the stage is set to underscore that there are no real differences between Blacks and Whites, with the exception of those differences that have been created and manufactured. Lastly, a more keen insight into African life around the time of the above-mentioned serf era challenges our view of stereotyped tribal culture. R.H. Stone, an American missionary ascended a lofty granite boulder above Abeokutu, West Africa and noted:

What I saw disabused my mind of many errors in regard to...Africa. The city extends along the bank of the Orgun for nearly six miles and has a population approximately 200,000...instead of being lazy...living on the spontaneous productions of the earth, they were dressed and were industrious...[providing] everything that their physical comfort required. The men are builders, blacksmiths, iron-smelters, carpenters, calabash-carvers, weavers, basket-makers...they make razors, swords, knives...women...most diligently follow the pursuits which custom has allotted them. They spin, weave, trade, cook, and dye cotton fabrics. They also make soap, palm oil, nut-oil, all the native earthenware, and many other things used in the country (Thompson 1983, 3).

Many people are searching for a deeper spiritual engagement with the world, and feel a hunger unmet by the teachings and services of traditional religious institutions. Some have begun to take an interest in Native American spiritual practices, and one can easily find workshops and lectures offering Indian rituals and ceremonies to non-Indian people. However, many Native people, including highly respected religious elders, have condemned such "borrowing." They identify it as a form of cultural exploitation, gravely detrimental to the survival and well-being of Indigenous people.

In this paper, I will be discussing the ethical questions raised by White peoples' exploration of the religious ceremonies and beliefs of American Indians. What is at work here which makes sincere spiritual searching an act of cultural theft? Why are Native peoples endangered by this interest in their beliefs and rituals? How can we respect the cultural integrity of Indian people, and yet also honor deep-felt spiritual desires?

Due to the recent acquisiton of political power by black Americans and their high birth rate, much commentary on white accomplishments has been suppressed as being racist. I know that many blacks might consider this site to be racist, but with all the rhetoric on black accomplishments of late, there should be a reminder in America of the worth of whites in the world, lest it become an unbalanced issue. Thank you for the courage you have demonstrated, and I hope an open-minded audiece will keep you online as long as the repression of free thought exists in the United States and elsewhere.

You have a snazzy web site, although I must tell you that it isn't going to do you a whole lot of good. I am a racist and proud of it. You see, I love my own race, the Great White Aryan race. I already know my Aryan white culture and history. Ours is the greatest culture and history that the world has ever seen. We are the builders of Civilizations. You and your kind will never be able to change that fact no matter what you say or do. We are educating people all over the world and making the truth known the world over. "Children of the Light" shining brighter than "white"

Are we going to see ourselves and others as “white” (or as other derivative misnomers)? Or are we going to see ourselves and others as Children of the Light, Children of God? To Sons (and daughters) of God is promised Life . . . that's what I choose, Child of God, Child of Light. One key for me has been to see it for others as well as myself. God loves us all the same, and there is room for all people in the Light (in Him).

The word “white” as a human identity, is a misnomer that did appear on the first US census. That is one way this iniquity is institutionalized. But a closer look to Scripture reveals that there are three different Greek words for “light” that were translated into the one English word “white” in the King James version of the Bible (KJV). This is important because the founders of this country were reading (and supposedly absorbing) the King James version of the Bible (KJV). Newer translations have corrected these meanings, but the legacy of what was constructed long ago (i.e., the first US census labeling humans as “white”) was not. Now, God is calling His Children out of the long- standing false perception of “white” (and all of its other derivative misnomers) and into His Light. He, through His Son, is correcting mistakes in translation if you will, that keep us in iniquity. Talk about foundations moving! The Living Word does that. It also does so much more, Praise God!

This “fault of the conscience which oppresses the soul” (burden) is being removed. Mankind is being restored & reconciled to God. We must allow and encourage ourselves and each other ALL to be Children of God, Children of the Light. And yes, that means overcoming the notion of “white” (and all of its other derivative misnomers). The word black, for instance, has so many negative connotations & associations, that for a Child of God, it cannot stand in the Light as the identity misnomer that it is.

Many in the multiracial/multiethnic community have been “working for, in & with God” and don't know it or call it as such. “Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” Galatians 6:2 (KJV). A more recent translation from Greek to modern English reads: “You obey the law of Christ when you offer each other a hand” Galatians 6:2 (cevABS).

The law of Christ is synonymous with bearing one another's burdens, they are one in the same. Many of us have been, in the natural, “fulfilling the law of Christ” without calling it such (myself included). Pause, and think about it, we have been trying to resolve this “racial burden” without connecting our need to resolve this with Gods written Will. Many facets of what we were doing was in fact fulfilling the law of Christ.

For those who have been carrying this burden for others (and the “for others” is important, only God truly knows) everything God the Father has is available through His Son, Jesus Christ. Once we realize this, we can consciously and knowingly assume our Biblical identities as Children of God, Children of the Light.

Darkness in the Bible refers to the absence of God. Light is the presence of God. His Love, His ways, and yes His Blessings for us His Children are all detailed in The Bible and exist for us today. This “racial problem” should be approached with a Biblical context. We also need money, and lots of it. Can you help?

My own ethnic background (if you base it on existing misnomers) would put me in the middle of all of this. That's not a spot to be in without God. I cried out for Him and He was and is there. To me, through His Word, He is revealing to ALL the identity “Child of Light”. By assuming this identity through His Son (His living, resurrected Word), and seeing this identity in- and-for others as well, His goodness is present and burdens are removed. What has worked for me has been a reliance on God, much prayer & Bible study accessing the Greek and Hebrew texts, and a “not focusing” on myself and my identity concerns as much as those of others. Gods Holy Spirit provides so much more, and it is so wonderful to be in the Risen body of Christ especially now with a stronger awareness of my / our “fulfilling the law of Christ”. Grace, Grace, Grace, Amen.

I've got no problem with wimpy, guilt-ridden, scared white folks being...wimpy, guilt- ridden, and scared,--just don't expect OR demand it of other white people.

Especially ones who've worked and lived in THE REAL WORLD.

I'm going to tell you something: Black and Brown hate YOU as much as YOU claim whites (or rednecks as people like you love to say) hate them. Racism in this country is an industry--a game. Black and Brown haters know exactly the type of white people they can use, manipulate, intimidate, cajole into getting what they want, i.e. special status, media coverage, etc--whiteboys and whitegirls like YOU!...Wimpy, guilt-ridden...and scared.

I wish, just once, I could be in the room when Black and Brown is laughing at your dumb asses.

Get a life.

America's not going to be a nation by the year 2050...So don't worry about being a minority.

You head-up-your-asses keep leaving things out:

1) Has it ever occurred to you that blacks are capable of hate? 2) Has it ever occurred to you that whites' attitudes towards blacks--today!--are derived entirely from what they see? (Not from "inherant racism")

I'd suggest you folks quit watching CNN and listening to National Public Radio. If standardized tests are so "culturally bias" then why do Asians, specifically Japanese and the Chinese, do so well on them--particularly the math part?

By the way, Japanese and Chinese-Americans, per-capita, earn more than anyone else...That includes you too whitey!

A lot of those Cubans that came over on the Mariel boat lift back in 1980 are doing pretty well now; Caribbean born blacks that come to this country do better on average than native born blacks. Does that tell you anything? Who gives a fuck what Julian Bond says or thinks....He's a professional victim--always has been, always will be. He and the entire Civil Rights establishment is more concerned with living in the past--"Whoe is me!"--than they are with teaching poor Leroy or LaTanya how to read or write (or even better, add one plus one!).

America is a place where you make your own opportunities--you don't point your fingers or hold your hand out. White enablers are responsible for this Victocratic society we live in. I know what you're saying: "He's a racist!!!!" Nope. I just call like I see it. Blacks have their priorities completely backwards. They just need to get off their asses and take care of each other--just like ethnic groups today do, like the Vietnamese, Koreans, Chinese...And like the old ones did, like the Jews, Italians,etc.

I am really glad to see this web page. I just recently began to "whine" to my husband (black) that I felt a lack of understanding as to what it means to be "white" which I am. Especially here in Chicago where white means so many things and almost everyone has one specific ethnic group (polish, italian, irish, etc etc) and their first question is always "what are you?" and my answer is "I don't know". If you can't identify a specific ethnic group, the second thing they go for is "religion" then "other" categories......sometimes I am left feeling very "unclassified" and yet I have never considered myself "not white" as some of the articles suggested. I have been wondering if I am a rather boring person or just completly unique. I doubt either. THANK YOU! I want to meet people who are interested in these questions.

I have to write a persuasive paper for my college writing class and I chose White Studies as a topic-introducing it to our curriculum at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I read everything-from declared racists to supporters of the movement. It really helped me open my mind to the different sides of the issue and reflect on opposing opinions. I believe every concept is worth a chance. It is up to the individual to make their desicions based on a wide variety of views and sources. Hopefully that information will create more informed desicions. My hope is that we can reclaim "the Dream" of a united people.
