Often the most segregated place in Latin school is the cafeteria. Most whites sit with whites and most blacks sit with blacks, Asians with Asians etc. I alternate between the four major groups and find small differences in the way each are treated. When I actually began to notice this I was so surprised because I was still trying to live under the impression that my school cared for me. When I would sit with the whites, the trash can would come around more often, teachers would comment on our attire positively and ask if we were going to the particular sport activity that night. When I would sit with the blacks, the teachers would come by but never talk to us and the few times they do, it is to say that we should quiet down. When I would sit with the Asians, teachers would come by and literally sit down to discuss what amazing accomplishments they have discovered and what did they think about that? The power to sit where I want and to make friends with whomever I want, in school and outside of it, is not only attributed to my personality but to a term called white privilege. Go!
